Tangerines are packed with Vitamin C to help support the immune system in the cold winter months, but they also prevent obesity!

Tangerines’ Tangible Gifts
Protect Your Health with this Sweet Fruit

Tangerines are sweet, affordable and in season, and now there’s another reason to stock up on this juicy fruit. Researchers from the University of Western Ontario have discovered that a tangerine flavonoid, nobiletin, appears to help prevent obesity and protect against Type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis, the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes.

When the researchers fed mice a “Western” diet high in fats and simple sugars, they became obese, showing all the signs associated with metabolic syndrome: elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, high blood levels of insulin and glucose, and fatty livers. A second group of mice—fed the same
nhealthy diet, but with nobiletin added—experienced no symptoms of metabolic syndrome and gained weight normally. Ingesting nobiletin also prevented the buildup of fat in the liver by stimulating genes that help burn excess body fat, while inhibiting genes
responsible for manufacturing it.

Benefits of "Cultural" Exercise.

The Art of Healthy Living   (excerpted from "Taste for Life" magazine, August 2011)

We all know that physical exercise is good for health, but what about cultural "exercise?"

Recent research has revealed that viewing an art exhibit, watching a play or even reading a poem are highly beneficial for one's health. Norwegian scientists interviewed more than 50,000 adults and analyzed their creative activities, such as exercising or playing an instrument, and their receptive activities, like watching a concert or sporting event. They also measured participants' overall health and satisfaction with their lives.

Culture made a big difference: 84% of those who participated in at least four activities, whether as creators or consumers, said they were in good or very good health. More than 90% said they were satisfied with their lives.

Women tended to benefit more from active engagement in culture. Instead of just listening to a concert, they fared better if they sang in a choir. Men showed improved health with any receptive cultural activity. The study revealed that overall, for both men and women, more involvement in cultural pursuits led to better health, more life satisfaction, and lower levels of anxiety and depression.

Poetry reading, anyone?

Health Tip of the Week

A Crush on Garlic

Heart-Healthy Advantages to Crushed Garlic

When it comes to protecting heart health, freshly crushed garlic works better than garlic supplements or dried garlic. New research published by the American Chemical Society explains that the heart-healthy effects of raw, crushed garlic result from hydrogen sulfide, a chemical that forms when fresh garlic is cut or smashed; when eaten, the hydrogen sulfide relaxes blood vessels, allowing for better flowing of blood to the heart.
